Top 5 Netflix Music Docos

Productively using the time you have stuck inside is essential, and ticking things off a mental list is great for feeling like you’re accomplishing something.

But even the most productive, disciplined people like to relax. Sometimes there’s nothing better than sitting back and putting your feet up with a movie, especially after you’ve earned it.

We wanted to throw you a list of some of our favorite music documentaries out on Netflix at the moment. The bonus of watching docos is that you’ll likely learn something.

Travis Scott: Look Mom I Can Fly

Directed by the young guru of music filmmaking ‘White Trash Tyler,’ Look Mom I Can Fly follows the story of Travis Scott’s career. The film features some aspects from his childhood and early career moments, up until the release of his third album ‘Astroworld,’ becoming one of the most prominent hip hop artists in recent history.

Travis’ life is as chaotic and rock star fueled as one might suspect in some areas, with private jets and stadium shows. But this documentary looks into the more personal aspects of his life: visiting his mother back in Houston, his relationship with his girlfriend Kylie Jenner, and the birth of their daughter, Stormi.

Take a look at the highs and lows of the last few years of one of the world’s biggest rap stars.

Hip Hop Evolution (Series)

Hosted by Juno award-winning artist Shad, Hip Hop Evolution is a Documentary series profiling hip hop and its leading figures through each era. The series features in-depth and personal interviews with some of the pioneers of hip hop. It unveils the butterfly effect that their actions had on the rest of the world, forever.

The series is a total of four seasons, with four episodes in each detailing the earliest moments of hip hop through to what it has become for us all today.

The Defiant Ones

A four-part documentary series, directed by Allen Hughes that follows the careers of Interscope Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine and rapper/producer icon, Dr. Dre.

Thoroughly detailing the highs and lows of Jimmy and Dre’s careers, the series also closely follows their partnership in the founding, and ultimately selling of Beats Electronics.

This is one of the most iconic partnerships in music business history – the caliber and influence of the moves they make are mind-boggling.

Dig into this. You’ll learn how a decision these two made in Dre’s living room changed your life.

Avicii: True Stories

A look into the turbulent life of Tim Bergling. The Sweedish DJ/record producer was one of the most loved artists of the dance music scene. He was a gifted musician and a wonderful person, but Tim had his demons.

The film takes a look at the life of a touring artist struggling with mental health issues and how painful that can be. It also includes footage of the last show he ever played before his tragic passing on April 20, 2018.

Lil Peep: Everybody’s Everything

A naked look at the troubled life and times of Gustav Åhr, known to the world as Lil Peep.

Told by his family and friends, Everybody’s Everything recounts how Peep lacked the ability to say no when people were asking too much of him. This, coupled with a severe dependence on drugs ultimately led to his tragic demise, at the ripe age of 21.

It’s not an easy watch, but it’s a lesson on how sensitive souls in the music industry often don’t fare well, and how treating those you love with the same respect you would want remains the most important thing.
